Recently at the school where Turisa taught, a construction worker died in an accident. More close to us is that a pastor couple’s son committed suicide. When I heard about these, I feel sad and will pray for their family for comfort. Many times I feel helpless, or because we got used to hearing bad news, it is nothing strange.
But being a pastor or believer, is helpless and let it be our usual condition? It should not be.
May be somebody will ask God, God is love, why did he allow His people (pastor’s son) go to the road of suicide? God is almighty, why He did not prevent it from happening? Where is his protection?
As a pastor and also taught in seminary, I must answer these questions. To answer the first question, first, we have to understand what the most precious thing God has given men was. God created men, gave us life and free will to act good or bad. That is the most precious thing. In life, men can do anything he/she likes in big or small things. God normally will not interfere without reason. Therefore, for most people who want to suicide, they can succeed, whether they believe in Jesus or not.
If the above is not normal condition of God, there will not be death in mankind. Because this loving God will use his almighty to prevent all the suicide, homicide, cancer and accidental death..
But we have to say that the normal condition of God in the Bible is that, when people seek Jesus for healing, He will heal them. When men pray to God, God will listen.
“At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.” (Luke 4:40)
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one”. (Matthew 6:13)
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” (Matthew 7:7)
Therefore, instead of questioning God after things happened, we should learn to pray more and ask God to deliver us from the evil one. Because the devil “comes only to steal and kill and destroy” (John 10:10) Therefore, we have to pray for our parents and children, ask God to protect them.
