The Need for a Spiritual Home

In my first outreach visiting the homeless people in the Hong Kong subway few years back, it was a deeply moving experience. Their situation often reflects more than just the lack of shelter—it reveals complex social, economic, and emotional, but more if this is the Spiritual struggles. Looking at the city’s wealth and modern infrastructure, comparing with the situation of the homelessness, I remained asking my self a big question, “has something fundamentally gone wrong”? if anything what is it?

Picture yourself in the places of those homeless people, faced with multitude of hardships. sleeping rough in public spaces like parks, subways, and under flyovers often struggling with poverty, illness, and loneliness.

Brethren, just as we all seek physical shelter and comfort, our souls crave a place where we can grow, connect, and thrive spiritually. In Hebrews 10:24-25, we are encouraged to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.”

Our spiritual home serves as a haven where we feel accepted and valued. It is where we can be ourselves, share our struggles and rejoice in our victories. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 68:6 that “God sets the lonely in families.” Being part of a spiritual community means finding a family, a group that walks alongside us in our journey of faith. We have a profound need for belonging, and a spiritual home offers that connection. Take a moment to reflect on your own spiritual journey. Do you feel a sense of belonging at Sunrise family? If not yet, take the initiative to reach out to the leaders you can reach or get to know someone new. Building relationship takes time but is well worth the effort.

A spiritual home provides a fertile ground for personal growth and development. At our Sunrise community, we learn from across board, from our pastors or leaders and from one another, teach each other, and encourage each other to deepen our faith. Ephesians 4:15-16 says, “instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is Christ.” Gathering regularly allows us to hear God’s word preached, participate in worship, and engage in various opportunities for learning and discipleship. Consider how you can engage more deeply in Sunrise family, through our different activities like classes, studies, small groups, evangelism, join worship teams, volunteer in ministries like ushering, welfare, out reaches etc.

Having a spiritual home is essential for our growth, belonging, and service. It’s a place where we find community, accountability, and opportunities to encounter God. As we reflect on our spiritual journeys, let us appreciate the significance of being part of a spiritual family at Sunrise. Remember the words of Psalm 133:1 “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there he Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. Amen !
